”My job is to bear witness,” said war correspondent Marie Colvin, who was always right there. Also when the Arab Spring broke out. On February 21st 2012 she reported from Homs, where the Syrian military was carpet bombing the district of Baba Amr. This was to be her last testimony. Marie Colvin was the embodiment of a war correspondent, with a patch over her left eye, which she had lost during the civil war in Sri Lanka. From the mid 80’s until her death she worked for the Sunday Times. Marie Colvin died at the age of 56 and among other things received the Foreign Press Association’s Journalist of the Year award.

In the West ”The Girl with the Blue Bra” has become a symbol of the suppression of Muslim women. In Egypt advocates of women’s rights see her as courageous, while conservatives speak of her moral degeneracy. In December 2011 she took part in a demonstration in Cairo against the Egyptian army, but fell as she was fleeing from the security police, who threw themselves on her, pulled her black gown over her head, beat her with truncheons and trampled on her. The Muslim gown hid her face but not the now iconic bra.”The Girl with the Blue Bra” wishes to remain anonymous.

It was the hitherto most forceful protest against Vladimir Putin, when on February 21st 2012 the punk group Pussy Riot said a “punk prayer” against Putin in the Church of Our Saviour in Moscow. Maria Alekhina, 24, Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, 22 and Yekaterina Samutsevich, 30 were arrested shortly after. On August 17th they were sentenced to two years in a labour colony for “hooliganism impelled by religious hate”. An appeal court released only Samutsevich, as she took no part in the prayer. The other two are now in different labour colonies far from Moscow. Both have small children. Pussy Riot is now the strongest symbol of imaginative peaceful resistance to Putin’s increasingly repressive regime.

Indian Sampat Pal Dali was 12 when she was married off and the mother of five by the age of 20. Today she is 48 and the leader of Gulabi Gang - ”The Pink Gulabi Gang” - who dressed in pink saris and armed with long bamboo sticks have risen up to fight against rape, wife burning and child brides.
Gulabi Gang was founded in an impoverished rural district in the state of Uttar Pradesh in 2006 to combat lawlessness and the monstrous abuse of girls and women, which the authorities often met with indifference. Today approximately 200,000 women have put on pink and are forcing the police and administrators to take the many instances of abuse seriously.
